Frequently Asked Questions

What is a caucus and convention?

In many ways, a caucus and convention is very similar to a primary. The main difference is that the nominee is elected through two stages, rather than one.

The first stage is the caucus. All registered voters are encouraged to participate in this phase of the nomination process. Each of the 23 localities in the 5th District (21 counties, Charlottesville, and Danville) will host a caucus during which voters will choose delegates to send to the district convention. Each delegate will have pledged their support to a specific candidate in advance of the caucus, allowing voters to determine which delegates they would like to support.

The second stage is the convention. The convention will be held on Saturday, May 5th at 11:00 AM in Farmville at the Fireman's Sports Arena. At the convention, delegates elected at each of the 23 caucuses will vote for their chosen candidate. The winning candidate will become the Democratic nominee.
