Candidate trying to unseat Garrett holds meet and greet in Charlottesville

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Leslie Cockburn, a candidate for Virginia's Fifth Congressional District, had a meet and greet in Charlottesville on Wednesday.

Cockburn was at Grit Coffee on the Corner by the University of Virginia. The Democrat was an investigative journalist for 35 years and is now looking to unseat freshman Congressman Tom Garrett.

She feels Garrett has been "unresponsive" and that she ultimately decided to run after President Donald Trump came to office after the 2016 elections.

Cockburn says health care is at the top of her platform.

"My feeling about health care now is it's time to think about Medicare for all," she said. "About not only changing and going back to the Affordable Care Act, putting that back in place, but going much forward. Getting back to a place with universal health care, which I believe is a right."
