CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -
A New York Times pollshows a close race in the fight for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District.
The Times spoke with 501 people living in the 5th District. The poll shows Democrat Leslie Cockburn (46%) with a one-percent lead over Republican Denver Riggleman (45%).
Ten-percent of those polled were undecided, and the margin of error is calculated to be plus-or-minus 4.6 percent.
The 5th District - which stretches from the state's border with North Carolina to Northern Virginia - is considered to be Republican-leaning, and the Times’ poll is one of the first to put Cockburn ahead.
The district's current representative, Tom Garrett (R), chose to not seek reelection.
President Donald Trump carried the 5th District in the 2016 elections.
Election Day is two weeks away.
